¿Será que llueve?

I think the rainy season might have arrived to Managua..

My mind and body are starting to complain as I obviously need a break from work. A weekend would be nice, for example – let’s see if I can find some time to squeeze one in somewhere in the near future.

Watched the 1995 movie La Haine yesterday, a very good one. Realized I used to know that kind of angry kids and the very clear and well presented connection to how the lack of inspiring, entertaining and protective environments and activities puts the social and emotional development of children and youth at very high risk. There were many scenes in the movie where the lead characters would just sit, for hours, being bored.

Which is exactly what I am working on right now, by the way. And the reason to why weekends often feel less urgent than getting things done.

Learning Spanish: Tenazas

image

Talking to my security guard at home:
“So, I need this thing.. it’s a tool.. that you grab and twist things with.
*making the movement*
I need it to close a leaking water tap in my patio. You know, you usually ise it to grab, turn, and tighten, or open, things.”
“Hmmmm.. grab, twist.. tenazas!”
“Maybe!”
“Let me get them for you.”

Today, my dear friends, I’ve learnt the word for pliers in Spanish. It’s tenazas.

No more leaks within my hearing range!

Formalities in Orange

Holland got a new king today so the Dutch embassy is throwing a big reception. As the Dutch are moving out of Nicaragua in a couple of months and closing the embassy, this evening is a particularly special one, packed with speeches, buffet, wine, tulips, networking and formal wear. All according to protocol.

And orange. So much orange.

Update: Forget what I said about protocol. Karaoke. Embassy staff rapping and singing in Dutch. And there’s no more wine. Oh, dear…

We don’t usually do this but..

..it’s just one of those days.

After a couple of very intense days in the office I eventually got the feeling that my work was accumulating, hours becoming shorter and energy levels dropping.

Recognizing what my body and mind were annoyed about, I left the office at 7pm and took the evening off yesterday. Went out for dinner with a friend, had a good talk with a beautiful view, and didn’t even glance at my computer when I got home. Ha!

Today my body and I woke up with enough energy to wash clothes and prepare a proper breakfast, so I think we are in agreement again – however, we just decided to have a cup of coffee.

We don’t usually do this but.. those deadlines won’t move no matter how we feel about them.

Sunday office

Too lazy to go to the office today despite that beautiful screen I could have been using instead. Yesterday I went back to the office after a friend had dragged me out for dinner and ended up staying until so late that my taxi driver laughed when I called him “The office? Now? I thought I would be picking you up from a club at this hour!

Today has been slower, and I even found a moment to have a nice lunch, swim and get some sun.

Now I’m back by the computer but I don’t have airconditioning in my room, and it’s very very hot (36’C), so I am using a drawer to keep my computer from boiling over and burning my legs.

I do have a proper table at home, but it’s out there.. in mosquito zone. My room has one of those electric Raid plugs so it’s safe. (They actually work!) All I have here are shy spiders and giant jumping ants, I don’t mind them – they don’t care about my blood. (And it’s hilarious when they jump.)

Sweet intruder

Suddenly there was a very loud noise coming from the roof above my room. It sounded as if somebody had jumped down onto it with both feet. I woke up immediately, and half asleep I imagined somebody from the US SWAT team in full gear who had just jumped out of a helicopter, or a clumsy cat woman styled thief who wanted to get in through the roof ‘mission impossible’ style, or was it maybe a ‘Donnie Darko’ airplane engine?

The sound that followed immediately forced me to dismiss all of my entertaining and far fetched theories. It was a fast “roll, roll, roll and splat” down onto my patio. I heard the nightly breeze play around with the big tree just above my house, and then there were one, two, three smaller airplane engines rolling down from my roof into my patio.

Right, the mango tree.

And the sound keeps waking me up every now and then, and makes my heart jump when I’m in a quiet mood or away somewhere far into my thoughs. Falling mangoes are very loud!

But then I have this in the morning, and life is super sweet again.

Juicy lies

image

“And a mixed fruit juice, please.”
“Sure!”

Suddenly my mind very cautiously whispered: “Caroline, you probably don’t want to see this..” And I was like: “Wait, what? Why? Well, now that you say so – I definitely have to see this.”

So I stood there, curious to see how these juices could be so tasty, watching as the girl threw a banana into the mixer, and big, nice pieces of mango, and some papaya, and some freshly squeezed orange juice..

My heart was going: “Yum, yum, yum delicious and colourful vitamins!” As she threw in some pineapple.. a little bit of strawberries..

..and then a huge cup of wite sugar.

My slowmotion “nooooooo!” wasn’t fast enough, the sugar ended up in the mixer. And I realized I had been drinking sugar camouflaged by fruit for a week. Everything else than the “healthy” I believed I was trying my best to be.

That was in the beginning of my Managua reality, now I always ask them to exclude the sugar when ordering my juice, and they always roll their eyes about me not wanting to drink a glass of lies.

The photos in this post are of a scale standing in one of the small supermarkets here in Managua. People don’t always have bathroom scales at home and you can find these in pharmacies and in various random places in the city. For 0.02€ you can check your weight in pounds, compare it to the “size” scale, get this week’s lucky lottery numbers, and be reminded about the fact that you are always special.

So, I might have gained a kg or three due to my cookie and sugarjuice diet, but I’m still special!
