365 words

“If you learn one word a day, in a year you will know 365 words.”

Words of wisdom from Aziz from Pakistan that sits next to me on the bus. We have just arrived to Barcelona after an 8h trip. And as many times, a simple bus ride proved to be more fruitful than many other things I do that seem to be of higher importance.

Good morning!

India and its Women

The amount of dignity that the Indian women were expressing when I saw them in India was both inspiring, impressive and touching. No matter how dirty and dusty the surroundings would be, they always managed to keep their faces and colourful clothes impeccably clean. No matter how much misery there would be around, they would always express calmness. Carrying their children on their backs while working as hard as the men, marked by tattoos, jewellery and colours binding them to their husbands, villages and status.

For me, being a foreigner invading their natural setting, I was thrilled by how these shy and quiet women wouldn’t treat me as an intruder and close me out with common prejudice. On the contrary, when approached with a smile, their eyes sparkled of curiosity and kindness and their willingness to communicate and exchange experiences with a woman from another world was touching. I sat down on the ground with women in many different cities, talking about their daily life and their dreams, sharing laughs and random memories. The importance of them giving their time to me and the gratefulness for having access to their worlds was immense. My male travel friends looked at me with envy as they were completely closed out from the colourful and giggly reality of Indian women. For me it was a lot easier – I was granted access just by being a woman and giving them a sincere smile.

Salar de Uyuni

One time I bought myself a Charango in Bolivia. Then I took a 12 hour bus from La Paz to the Salt deserts of Uyuni and learnt how to play “el condor pasa” in the sun.

There are some moments one can just live, re-live and appreciate, endlessly. I am trying to collect as many of these as possible and it’s a never ending project that I love living.

Goodnight!

Together for the Kids!

With the help of all the people that donated at the exhibition, ordered photos, bought things through the webpage and sent smses, I managed to collect 12.585kr (1345€) for the kids of the world, through my account at Unicef.

Thank you everybody, this is a beautiful result and we did it together – for the kids!  – Tillsammans för Kidsen!

This was a project where I mainly focused on the situation and reality of the children in India through my photography and the photo exhibition that was held in december, the money raised will however go to kids all over the world – and more help and attention is always needed. In other words – the fundraising continues. The account stays open and there is always a possibility to contribute in many ways. The easiest being by sending an sms from a Swedish mobile to 72 900 where you write KÄMPA KIDS.

Tomorrow I’m jumping onto my flight to Barcelona and I’m hoping that the flight attendants at Spanair will let me bring my home-made box with the photos onto the flight.. I’m bringing some of my kids along, their reality deserves to be displayed and acknowledged in more places.. let’s see what happens.

But first… let’s dance!

Cristo, my Bhaia

This is a very nice boy I met in Varanasi, India in October 2010. His name is Rahul Pandit but everybody knows him by his Italian name, Cristo. We met when I was walking around Varansi alone and he ended up showing me around the city for three days. We became very good friends and he said that I am his sister and he is my brother, my bhaia. I received an email from Cristo recently and the 22nd of December was apparently his birthday so I thought I would give him a little surprise and write about him on my blog to give people the possibility to find him if they are going to visit Varanasi.

Cristo took me to secret little temples and places I never would have found alone which was really nice, he also told me that if I heard of people going to Varansi I could give them his contact details and he would be glad to show them around. Cristo works as a guide on his own so he knows Varanasi very well, he speaks English and Italian and besides that he is a very good student and a very kind and caring person.

If you are going to Varanasi and you would like to get in touch with Cristo, you may send him an email at rahulpandit072(at)gmail.com or just simply give him a call at his mobile, 9161561336. Say hi from Caroline from Sweden & Poland that was his sister in October and he will hopefully remember me :)

Happy birthday Cristo! :)
