Speaking of Beards and Femininity

Men wearing women’s clothes, women with beards, Eurovision Song Contest drama and a whole lot of debate later I stumbled upon the story of 23-year-old Harnaam Kaur. It’s not directly related to Conchita nor her choice of outfit, but still a response to some of the mean and bullying comments I found on my feed yesterday alongside a predominantly positive response. There are as many set-ups of gender, sexuality, preferences and fantasies as there are people out there and that isn’t a problem in itself – the people who judge, bully and hurt are the issue.

“Meet the 23-year-old girl who’s growing a beard — and says she feels more feminine than ever. Harnaam Kaur, from Slough, suffers with polycystic ovary syndrome, which causes excessive hair growth. She was just 11 years old when it started appearing and she spent her teenage years desperately trying to remove it by waxing twice a week and covering her body in baggy clothes. The primary school teaching assistant endured vile abuse at school and strangers would stare at her on the street. Harnaam became so self conscious she refused to leave her house, except to go to lessons, and at her lowest point she began self harming and even considered taking her own life. But, at the age of 16, she finally found the courage to accept her facial hair after being baptised as a Sikh. The religion dictates that the body should be left in its natural state and body hair must be left to grow. The decision proved controversial with her family but Harnaam was determined to show that she was beautiful no matter what she looked like. Today, seven years on, she says she is more body confident than ever before and hopes her story will help other women in her situation.”

Happy Easter!

A stunning piece by students from the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg who rescued three male chicks from a hatchery in Germany. They showed and donated the Phantom Flex filmed piece to PETA, who now shares the short but very straight forward, smart and simple piece of slap-in-the-face advertising.

I’ll still wish you a happy Easter, no matter what you have chosen to do with the holidays. Enjoy!

The Sheltering Sky

Ryuichi Sakamoto – The Sheltering Sky
The Sheltering Sky Soundtrack (1990)

Here’s a live piano piece from the ultra-talented activist, pianist, actor, composer, musician, writer and singer Ryuichi Sakamoto from Japan. If you have missed his previous piano works or his experimental and mysteriously soothing collaborations with Alva Noto, head on to Youtube and explore. I wish you a sweet and relaxing Sunday evening in the company of your mind.

Fennesz + Sakamoto – Cendre (2007)

War on Women

This short documentary released by IRIN earlier today is absolutely horrifying and heart breaking. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Dearbhla Glynn, it explores sexual violence in Democratic Republic of Congo through the testimonies of both perpetrators and survivors.

It’s not a particularly pleasant watch, but it’s important, and IRIN has done a very good job on this piece. Click play.

Saigon, also known as Ho Chi Minh City. Last stop in Vietnam.

Saigon was our last stop in Vietnam, and also the last stop of the entire two-week trip. The weather was far more pleasant than in the capital up north, so walking around the city was nice and the atmosphere and people felt very different. We did a lot of shopping, a lot of eating, and spent a lot of time next to the very much appreciated rooftop pool of the hotel. I had a nice and relaxed birthday and it was generally a good way to end the trip, which had been intense and packed with impressions.
