Talent Fusion

snarky

Spending a couple of days with Chema in Mexico was as always a submersion into a world of instruments, beats and musical talent. We like to show each other tunes we think are extraordinary. I gave him Alina Baraz and some other gems, he showed me these crazy geniuses with their drums and voices and quirky solos.

Dirty Loops is a Swedish 3-man band that has been active since 2008. They started out by making really fun interpretations of famous pop songs and released their first album with self composed tunes in 2014. It’s fun, it’s catchy, the drumset guy is a genius, the bass guy is a funny emo and the singer has really cool kick and soul in his voice that reminds me of RnB singers from the early 90’s. Most importantly, they seem to be having the time of their life when playing and you just want to hop in there and dance along.

Snarky Puppy is a fusion band from Brooklyn that does an incredible job mixing a variety of instruments and merging their improvisations into a constant flow, they are more than 15 people playing together and often back other artists in concerts – if you have a moment to watch the video, listen, and feel the music – it’s like sitting first row in a top notch jazz/fusion/magic concert. Don’t miss the sick keyboard solo, these guys are very good.

Stromae – Papaoutai
Racine Carrée (2013)

Been a while since I posted anything music related here. There will be photos and tons of updates soon, but first this. This thing is SO GOOD, and the artist is just ridiculously talented as both actor, dancer and singer. Loving it.

Happy Tuesday, people!

Please.. please dance with me!

Beautiful production, perfect direction and touching sound. So much vibe!

Masterly composed ‘Can Do it’ by Atu has been seamlessly tuned with a very emotionally charged video that definitely speaks to me, I have to share this! I love the way Atu sneaks in the sample between the beats and piano string, can you recognize it?* You need to have had an R&B period in your life to hear it, it’s very very subtle. I love it when talented artists feature samples from old songs I’m nostalgic about but no longer listen to, I always feel like I’m reconnecting with my old, rebellious and slightly confused teenage friends who now have grown to become intelligent, deep and mature adults.

One could argue that Atu has pushed the mastering to its limits, but I don’t mind. The slight distortion adds to the dreamy vibe.. it’s really good.

Atu – Can Do It
Pictures on Silence (2013)

Now, this particular tune is a year old and I just found it now – but I also really enjoyed listening to the rest of the album and Atu’s Soundcloud channel while working. The beats are fresh, perfectly mellow, and the mash of samples really throws me back. So much soul! I’m very happy to have a new artist to follow.

“Atupele Ndisale (Atu, for short) born in the Ivory Coast and studying at University of Michigan is the young age of 20 but brings aural sensibilities of a seasoned producer. Utilizing the most minimal bits of vocal samples, so slight that your brain has to work to recognize the likes of Miss Aaliyah Haughton and E. Badu alongside dreamy interpolations of Boyz II Men and Alicia Keys.
Beside all the beauty of this project, when was the last time you saw an artist drop their first album and donate all the proceeds? Being that Atu is originally from Malawi, he, alongside label Soulection have planned for all proceeds of “Pictures on Silence” to go toward the EveryChild organization in effort to provide some financial assistance to rural areas of Malawi.”

Oohh.. that very, very discrete “loving yoou..” sample* in this one drives me mad as I just want to sing along and go “has taken time.. but I always knew you would be miine.. We can take a step to see, if this is really gonna bee.. all you gotta do is say yes!” Can you hear it, can you, oh can you? Ahh.. Love!

Time for Lunch!

August in Belize

Here are some photos and videos from August that I didn’t publish.

August was a month of many new beginnings and starting to settle in this city and country. A lot of work, but also a lot of pleasure.

I visited the impressive Lamanai pyramids, did some island-hopping, danced at the Costa Maya festival, started taking private Shotokan and self defence classes, continued dancing and bonding with the beautiful Danza Revelation crew, and started going for Hot Yoga on Saturday mornings.

In the photos shared below there are glimpses of a couple of dinners with friends and work colleagues, a barbecue/paella pool-party at the British High Commission, working on getting UNICEF in the spotlight through live radio broadcasts, TV talk shows and breast feeding specials, and a beautiful concert by the African-American a’capella group Sweet Honey in the Rock, with an opening by the Belizean pride The Garifuna Collective.

Belize City is home now, how crazy is that?

Falling off a horse

image

Dreamy enough for a Friday night at home with candles and chocolate. Been a while since I listened to fun and inspiring tunes like this – but since I recently started using Google Play Music to listen to “what you might like” radio, Google surprises me with music I had forgotten I really appreciate. (Wait past the 30 intro seconds for goodies.)

Thank you once again, dear neighbour, for kindly sharing your wifi password with me.

Felix Laband – Falling off a horse
Dark Days Exit (2005)

Guess who’s coming tomorrow! (With curtains! haha)

Nighty.

We’ll never be like them – No one is like we are.

“I’m waking up and remain in bed. I can feel you breathing. The whole world is awake, you’re shutting off. Will this become easier some day? This is where I want to be, although I shouldn’t. Come a little closer. I can see you thinking that you should leave..

Please just turn around, give me something to dream about, we’ll never be like them..

No one is like we are. People all around but. No one is like we are. All we know. No one is like we are. High above the ground. No one is like we are. And so what? No one is like we are. And you are just like me. No one is like we are. I’m of another kind. No one is like we are. It’s never going to be like it’s supposed to. No one is like we are..

I’m waking up in a different city. Where I’m not supposed to be. I’m imagining how it all could be. This heat is making me weak. Nobody knows that you’re just like me. Stay a little longer. I’m saying your name but I get no response.

No one is like we are!

Little Jinder & Melo – Inga e som vi e (2014)

Listening to the pink, fluffy and very high pitched love duet by Little Jinder and Melo. The video is continuing on the satirical and stereotype pushing wave that Swedish pop lately has been riding, and it’s all just sugar-coated and cheesy enough to create a double-negative and turn the experience into something beautiful. I believe. And then there’s of course the sincere looking making-out session, and the high quality video and light, accompanied by, again, overly cheesy editing. You know that wonderful, warm, sunny bubble that turns you into an irrational, giggling, emotional and constantly overwhelmed fuzzball? Yes, that one. Even the video manages to capture the sweet absurdity of it, and Little Jinder explains further in an interview with the magazine Nöjesguiden:

“A lot of your music, and this video, seems to be about capturing a certain feeling. Is this song about being super-duper mega in love?”

“- Exactly. I think it’s interesting how you just “lose it” when you feel very strongly for other people, both negatively and positively. This particular song highlights the need of creating a bubble that can maintain the conviction that what you feel is totally unique and very, very right.”

Little Jinder

And me? I got late for the dinner I was getting dressed for when this song started playing on my streaming radio. The urge to flow around, sing along, and press repeat was too strong to ignore, and I was filled with a feeling of love for the world, happiness for finding time to cultivate my work-out endorphins, and just.. calm. Then I got dizzy from spinning around and realized I should get going, so I threw on my long black dress, painted my lips red to match my freshly bruised knuckles, and jumped into the car.
