I am completely blissful about Active Child’s latest EP, Rapor..! Yes, even an exclamation mark right there. It has been up for streaming for a week now, and releases today (October 22nd) on iTunes through Vagrant Records. The EP has instantly been added to my list of rare but perfect albums for driving at night and singing along. What you have here is absolutely wonderful 80’s electro pop with Pat Grossi’s sweet and melancholic falsetto voice, glistering synths and some subtle but very much welcome post-dubstep vibes that reconnect you with the 2013 feel. Featured on the EP are also the vocal talents of Ellie Goulding and Mikky Ekko (Who tips on the border of sounding just a little bit too much like Justin Timberlake, but gets away with it.) The EP is only 22 minutes long and leaves me craving for more, but the six tracks still manage to provide a perfect balance between playful, painful, epic and soulful. It’s just all there, I’m not kidding. A thousand times repeat.
Darkside – Paper Trails
Psychic (2013)
Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington released the album Psychic two weeks ago under the moniker Darkside. Here’s a live session of the track Paper Trails, filmed and edited by Resident Advisor. But please, please – only press play if you have patience, speakers with a proper bass and after changing to HD quality. This live version is twice the lenght of the original, so try appreciating the hazy tunes and Harrington’s classic rock guitar the way they deserve to be appreciated – turn the volume up, relax, wait for the bass, and let yourself be taken to a darker place. The closed eyes, arms up, swaying kind of dark.
So Prince, yes, the 55-year old “Artist formerly known as Prince” Prince, has released a new single – and it comes wih a hilarious video directed by beautiful Danielle Curiel, who also appears in the video – as Prince himself. Confused? Just enjoy the dancers. “Hotcakes smothered in honey? I’m gon’ have to pass.”
Prince – Breakfast can wait (2013)
I was never a huge Prince fan, until seeing him live at the Way out West festival in 2011 – still the sexiest and most engaging concert I’ve ever been to. It was amazing to sing along to Purple Rain!
Remember that 2004 Dave Chappelle sketch about Prince? Well, as if all of this wasn’t funny enough, they used a screenshot of Dave Chappelle from that sketch to make the artwork for the single. It’s so ridiculously bad it makes me love it even more. “Fresh cup of coffee, no, no. I’d rather have you in my glass”
Remember when Renata was invited up to dance when we visited the New York Jazzclub SMOKE and stayed around after most people had left? Here’s the video evidence that it actually happened. Along with some sweet music. Top quality unexpected randomness.
Hanging out with Richie is always easy. We’re eating cheese and playing GTA V. And I’m being introduced to new tunes and videos, as always.
Satin Jackets – You Make Me Feel Good (Original Mix) (2013)
Jessie Ware – Sweet Talk (2013)
The Hics – Cold Air (2013)
Tuccillo & Kiko Navarro feat. amor – Lovery (Yoruba Soul Remix) (2012)
Yuna – Live your life (2012)
Yesterday night Renata and I went to Smoke Jazz Club just a couple of blocks away from her home here in the Upper West Side, where we were surprised by the spontaneous jamming of various world renowned Jazz musicians. The food was amazing, we were sitting just by the stage, Renata was asked up to dance, and we were among the last people to leave the club. A fantastically genuine experience of real New York Jazz, goosebumps and all included.
Dropping some names, we got to hear George Coleman, James Carter, Bill Saxton and of course the very eloquent Patience Higgins and his band The Sugar Hill Quartett, who play at Smoke every Friday night. Bill Saxton invited us to his jazz club in Harlem, called Bill’s Place – so if you’re up for some real Harlem Jazz, they start doing magic at 9pm tonight.
If you want to hear the amazing saxophone of George Coleman, who used to play with Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock back in the 60’s, he will be at Smoke tonight again. You should try to visit the venue anyhow if you’re around and have some love for Jazz, the place has a very personal touch which allows you to really connect with the musicians, and the sound is perfect.
You know when you have so much to say that you don’t know where to start? I frankly haven’t had a moment in front of my computer the past month where I have been doing other than quickly sending a document or just backing up my photos. Now, for instance, I am waiting for my New York photos to be backed up while painting my nails and researching the DJ’s that will be playing at tonight’s Moombathon, Renata is jumping around, and we are leaving the house in one hour.
I’m sorry – but I just can’t bother blogging right now, also, the stories I have to share are too special to be resumed – and you want the full picture, right?
But to give you something: Here’s what we will be dancing to tonight in Brooklyn, can’t wait.
Today I had the best cookie in the universe; Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip at Levain here in Renata’s neighbourhood. Almost fainted. Yesterday night a friend took me to mingle at a weekly networking event at the Princeton Club. I’ve been mixing work and vacation while being here, visiting museums, going for meetings, watching live music, watching people in the subway, eating amazing food and trying not to get overwhelmed by my excitement about this city. The last picture is one that Renata took of me this morning before going to work. I’m obviously exhausted, it’s been an amazing month.
Barcelona, 2011
My supertalented Barcelona friend Chema/Hytec has released a new tune – can’t believe I’ll be seeing his face sooner than soon! A huevooouu!
Like that? You’ll love this.
