The wonderful surprises of DJ Jesaja

Growing up with an affection for the voices and beats in R&B and soul tunes, I have been struck by euphoria to DJ Jesaja’s music in different clubs in Malmö since I was 15 years old. They say that he plays R&B, but he always makes sure to throw in some marvellous oldschool soul track, or surprise with some classic hip hop, dancehall, New Jack Swing or funk, and I can’t help but loving even the most cheesy parts of it.

One evening in 2005, when I was sitting in front of the computer while on vacation in Poland, Jesaja called me on Skype. He was playing in a club in Sweden, and instantly managed to turn my boring Saturday evening into one of the most memorable music experiences I have had. Dancing with headphones ftw.

Today, Jesaja wrote to me saying that a stream of his latest radio mix was available online, and I instantly began swaying. One and a half hour later, when reaching Koffee Brown’s After Party, I died a little from nostalgia overload. This is just wonderful, so I’m sharing. Do enjoy.

Lyssna: Din Gata – DJ show

Traditionally perfect

Here’s a song I’ve been in love with sine I first heard it on the radio here in Maputo. Please note the wonders that kick in at 1:46 – we dance to this beauty whenever we get the chance to.

So yes, the video drips of traditionally pink and fluffy “perfect wedding” dreams. The slow motion effect and the theme take away a lot of beat and edge from the song as I knew it before, but it’s a sweet and well made video that might be an interesting insight for those of you who are far from this enchanting continent. I guess we can conclude that dream weddings look pretty much the same over here – horses and all that stuff included.

Filming the sunrise

Wonderful, wonderful sunrise drive with friends.

That was Saturday morning, right after leaving the Maputo Fortress:

People don’t stop dancing here even after the sun has come up, I haven’t even managed to be the last person on the dancefloor yet – it’s so great.

The song in the video from the car is Angel Eyes by Submotion Orchestra and this is my opportunity to officially thank Rui for having the best car music in Maputo and for introducing me to this band. Obrigada, mister!

Super Smooth

Good stuff by Stevie Briggs.

“Michael Jackson made it no secret that he was inspired by Fred Astaire. As clearly seen in this short video, it wasn’t only his dancing that Jackson mirrored. Notice costume and lyrics.

The video contains clips of ‘The Band Wagon’… Fred Astaire’s 1953 Musical, and clips from Michael Jackson’s short films ‘Smooth Criminal’, ‘You Rock My World’, and live performances of ‘Smooth Criminal’ from the 1992 ‘Dangerous World Tour’, and 1995 ‘MTV Video Music Awards’ performance of ‘Dangerous’.”

Close to.. who?

Today’s big question is why I sent an email to myself at 1am last night, saying nothing but “close to you”.

Actually, it’s far less mysterious than one might think. We were dancing at Núcleo De Arte and the DJ was playing oldschool funk and New Jack Swing. The reference is to a song that I was very happy to hear and wanted to look up once I got home, the problem was I couldn’t remember the title, and that I wanted to dance rather than write. So I sticked with these three words that I can’t even google nor use to spark my memory. Instead, I’ll use the email and this blogpost to reminisce about yesterday’s adventures, it was like being sixteen all over again. The music, the athmosphere, the giggles!

And to ease your dissapointment for this not being a juicy novel about some mysterious person that I suddenly was being oh-so-close with, I give you three girls in LBD’s and an intensely bouncing Bobby instead.

.

Those thoughts built together, theories and little agreements, details spent hours and years discussing before reaching perfect and agreed upon conclusions. All those constructed convictions and values that once helped us define ourselves. Many of them are still valid, but living and working in their separate realities, transformed into two independent truths. We suddenly grew apart and I lost the person who once sparked my mental development, my best and most valued friend. You, your mind and your ability to understand will be missed and thought of, always.

I give you one hour of Portishead, the 1997 concert at Roseland in New York. It’s your day today.

Pictures and Sleep Party People

Maputo is cloudy today after yesterday’s storm, and I’m soon going back to FACIM. It’s the last day today and I expect to get promotional T-shirts, bags and random business cards thrown at me all day, as in the ending of most expo’s.

Anyway, while relaxing at home yesterday I found a song that I would like to share with you.

This messy little beat was released a month ago by Andrea x Kodak To Graph and it’s called Pictures. The tune is so random that I can’t really think of in what occasion it would be perfect to listen to. Other than now, that is. I guess it’s one of those songs that you would put in a “random” or, as in my case “Pretty Much Amazing” playlist on your iPod and look up at those moments when you’re not really sure what you want to listen to. Yes, that’s exactly what this song is for: For when you’re looking forward to something great, without yet knowing what it is. Ha!

The second song goes in the same playlist. Here’s Sun Glitters featuring vocals from Danish Sleep Party People, edited by Tours. The song has been named Alone. I would say it gives the feeling of the good kind of alone, though.

This one was released 10 days ago, and I don’t know if you noticed, but there are download buttons up there. The artists are sharing these fresh pieces of art, awesomely, legally and for free. Because sharing is caring. Ciao!

Something about Stella

Here’s a beautifully random coincidence for you:

Yesterday when my friends picked me up to take me to Catembe, the driver was playing one of my favourite songs ever that I hadn’t heard in a really long time. I was euphoric, sang along and wouldn’t let him change it, he said that “Something about us” was the only one he had from the album – which was perfect as it was the only one I wanted to hear. We crossed the bay and ended up all having a great night out, as you already know.

Just now, while blogging and chatting on Facebook about yesterday’s evening and photos – the same friend writes “Your Portuguese is stellar” which I find being a nice expression. Around that moment, I go: “pick a random number” and he picks the number 19.

Why I wanted a number? Because I sometimes pick a random page in my blog to read, you know, the way you sometimes would open an old book in the middle just to dive into those memories again.

So I write http://www.carolinebach.com/blog/page/19/ – and start scrolling. And what do I find? It’s just a pretty frikkin’ perfect coincidence, don’t you think?

Free and Dirty, this is Lazer.

Major Lazer are soon dropping their new album, “Free the Universe” and they have named the first single from it “Get Free”. I just found the newly released video, and it’s sexy, sweaty, inappropriate, dreamy, and beautifully rub-a-dub eclectic – just the way we love our Major Lazer. I can’t wait to listen to the rest of the album, I expect it to be absolutely amazing. Marking November 6th in my calendar. There will definitely be dirty dancing and singing along to this one, I might even have to import my Tiger Lily to accompany me. Would you?

Major Lazer featuring Diplo and Amber from Dirty Projectors, the video was shot in Jamaica by SoMe and produced by Iconoclast.
